ECOSAN PROGRAM

Masy Consultants is committed to promoting self-sufficiency by educating communities about EcoSan systems as an alternative and accessible solution to improve their health, natural environment and agricultural economy.

WHAT IS ECOLOGICAL SANITATION?

Ecological sanitation (EcoSan) is an integrated sanitation strategy developed through traditional knowledge and biological science in which natural processes are utilised to transform human wastes into fertile soil.

EcoSan is based on three principles:

(1)   Prevention of pollution rather than reactive control or mitigation

(2)   Sanitising poop and urine to create organic fertilisers

(3)   Re-purposing the safe product to enhance agricultural production

EcoSan toilet systems provide an innovative and low-cost solution to address multiple problems simultaneously and promote circular economy. These toilets bring substantial value and benefits to communities including:

ECOSAN IS FOR EVERYONE

EcoSan toilets not only benefits the public by reducing the spread of illnesses and improving environmental quality, but it also benefits the individual, family, community centres and schools using or promoting the toilets by providing livelihood opportunities, particularly in provinces with limited resources.

As potable water supplies are becoming scarce, especially at the face of population growth, urban development and climate change, it makes less and less sense to flush away good drinking water every time someone uses the bathroom.

For vulnerable Filipino communities, there is a dire need to explore alternative sanitation solutions which are accessible and scalable.  EcoSan toilets is a proven concept with small to large ecological sanitation projects emerging around the world, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region.

With water-borne illnesses being a leading cause to sickness and infant mortality in the Philippines, it is imperative that businesses, government and local leaders work together to educate communities about the benefits of EcoSan versus traditional sanitation approaches.
